I thought I'd kick off this box braids series with a lesson on how to preserve those edges.
Ever wondered how to preserve your edges whilst wearing braids? If it is supposed to be a good protective style, why do my edges suffer? Well you have come to the right place to get an answer to that.
The use of protective styling can be very beneficial to retaining hair length, but could cause damaged edges if they are strained. Thank you Playy of Verve96 for suggesting this topic. You guys should check out that website, you wont regret it.
Ehen, to the order of the day.
I narrowed these tips down to four donts and one do :)
1. Leave those edges alone: When braiding your hair, don't try to pick every single strand of hair in front. They can be laid with edge control. It may be tempting to have a flawless finish, where your forehead is shining and your eyes are pulled so far back so that everyone knows you just came from the hairdressers. If you are serious about growing your hair, just go as far away from your edges as possible. Gbam!
2. Avoid micro braids: Unless you are really REALLY patient when taking down these braids, I advice you stay away because you are sure to have a bald patch. The recommended sizes are medium and large. Very large braids tend to stress the scalp and hairline.

3. Avoid over styling: Ahan! We cannot style braids again? Of course you can, but sometimes let the down. Constantly twisting and turning can cause damage to the hair line. Make sure to not pull your hair back too tightly, all because you want that flawless bun. African hair is more sensitive than you might think.
4. Don't leave your braids in for more than 8-10 weeks: Leaving it longer can cause your hair to lock and make take down so much more difficult. At this stage, it becomes impossible to save hair that you have grown over those weeks.
5. Be Patient: This is the number one rule of anything hair related. When taking down your braids, make sure you have free time on your hands. We are talking hours here. If you want to grow your hair but dont have that much time. Don't braid! My opinion.
How would you preserve your edges whilst in braids?
Disclaimer: I am not a professional. I am just a girl that has done a lot of research on this subject. I have not had any training in hair nor have I gone for any course hair related. These are based on my own experiences. All hair differs, so yours may differ from mine.
